Write the non-negotiables first

What must work from the wall? Who will maintain it? What equipment is already present? What should happen without internet? Those questions are more useful than starting with a favourite platform.

I separate everyday operation from optional features. A dashboard can change later. A poor control layout is harder to forget.

Compare the actual dependencies

Home Assistant can communicate locally with devices that support it. That does not make every integration independent of the cloud. Apple Home supports scenes and automations, with a home hub involved in automated behaviour. Check the specific accessories and features being proposed.

A proprietary system may offer a coordinated installation and support path. Ask who can service it, what changes cost and which functions depend on ongoing services. No category earns a blanket endorsement.

Plan for the handover

The person who enjoys maintaining a system may not be the next person living with it. Keep records, explain ownership of accounts and agree who looks after updates and recovery.

I choose around the house and its users. The platform should support that decision rather than become the project’s identity.
